Nigella seeds are often mistaken with Black Cumin and Caraway, these small seeds have an onion flavor and are black in appearance.

 

This is one of the worlds oldest spices and was commonly used in Ancient Egypt as food and ceremonial offers. Oddly enough in ancient times the Egyptians actually used cumin as a preservative during mumification. They even found Nigella Seeds in Tutankhamun’s tomb!

 

Used in the Middle East to season breads, curries in India and one of the main ingredients in Bengali Panch Phoron these seeds have multiple uses around the world. (other names for Nigella Seed include: Nigella, nigella sativa, kalonji)
